New York City Council Member Tiffany Cabán Celebrates the Council Voting to Designate January 31 as Cecilia Gentili Day Annually

January 23, 2025

New York City

Today, the New York City Council passed LGBTQIA+ Caucus Chair Council Member Tiffany Cabán’s resolution to designate January 31 as Cecilia Gentili Day annually.

In celebration, Council Member Tiffany Cabán released the following statement:

“I am so proud today to be passing a resolution that honors the late, great, Cecilia Gentili.

I am proud to do so the very same week that a bigoted, hateful enemy of the transgender community took office as President of the United States. The passage of this resolution is proof that New York City will not stand for Donald Trump’s hateful, anti-trans rhetoric and policy. Instead, we will continue to celebrate the joy and power of the transgender community.

Cecilia Gentili was a fearless leader, a trans icon, an author, an actress, a pioneering advocate for the dignity and freedom of sex workers, and so much more. She put her body on the line for anyone facing exploitation, discrimination, or persecution.

Even though Cecilia is no longer with us, her impact lives on and is magnified by every person who knew her. May her memory be a joyous, visionary, fearless revolution, and may our city’s new Cecilia Gentili Day serve as a testament to that revolution.

I look forward to gathering in community next Friday, January 31 to celebrate the first annual Cecilia Gentili Day.”
